A journey shaped by experience

Led from the Field

Sensing Africa was not created from a desk, but from years spent in the African bush. Founder Pieter Vandenbroucke lived and worked in remote wilderness areas, guiding guests, mentoring future guides and operating in environments where awareness, preparation and respect for nature are essential.

Although his professional background lies in international and commercial environments, Africa remained a defining force. Over time, travel evolved into field experience, and field experience into expertise. Pieter came to understand that meaningful journeys are not built around sights, but around presence, structure and immersion.

This conviction led to a deliberate investment in professional training. Pieter is certified as a (trails) guide in both Southern Africa (FGASA Level 2) and Kenya (KPSGA Bronze), a rare cross-regional qualification and unique in Belgium. His training in advanced tracking, rifle handling and wilderness first aid allows him to operate safely in remote areas and design expeditions that go beyond conventional safari travel.

Years of guiding and exploration across Sub-Saharan Africa have created a deep operational knowledge of terrain, ecosystems and logistical realities. That accumulated field experience forms the backbone of Sensing Africa.

With Sensing Africa, you are not joining a pre-designed itinerary. You are stepping into a journey shaped by lived experience, structured, intentional and rooted in the wild.

Kenya Professional Safari Guide - Bronze Level: Pieter's expertise extends beyond South Africa as he has obtained the Kenya Professional Safari Guide certification. This qualification showcases his in-depth understanding of the Kenyan wilderness, its wildlife, and the local ecosystems.
Field Guides Association Southern Africa Field Guide - Apprentice Trails Guide: Pieter's passion for active safaris led him to pursue the Apprentice Trails Guide qualification. Advanced Rifle Handling: Pieter understands the importance of safety when encountering potentially dangerous game. His advanced rifle handling training equips him with the necessary skills to handle firearms responsibly and effectively in the wilderness.
Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000: Committed to adhering to the highest safety standards, Pieter has extensive knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 2000, which governs the possession and use of firearms in South Africa.
Tracker Academy - Level 3 Tracks & Signs, Level 2 Trailing: Pieter's dedication to providing an authentic and immersive safari experience led him to acquire tracking skills from the prestigious Tracker Academy. His expertise in interpreting tracks and signs, as well as trailing wildlife, enhances the overall safari experience.
Wilderness First Aid Level 2: Safety is paramount in the African wilderness, and Pieter ensures that he is prepared for any situation. His Wilderness First Aid Level 2 certification equips him with the necessary skills to handle medical emergencies in remote locations, providing peace of mind to his clients.
Navigation and Orientation: As an experienced guide, Pieter possesses exceptional navigation and orientation skills. Whether it's traversing vast savannahs or navigating dense forests, he ensures that every safari is conducted with precision and efficiency.
Viewing Potentially Dangerous Game: Pieter's qualifications also include training in safely viewing and approaching potentially dangerous game.
